Role

As a casual Laboratory assistant, you will contribute to the effective operation of the laboratory practical program. The role focuses on practical preparation for Chemistry, Biology and Physics. The role reports directly to the Director of Learning and Teaching.

Responsibilities

  • Support college academic staff with laboratory sessions
  • Manage laboratory resources and equipment
  • Manage laboratory preparation for practical sessions
  • Participate in laboratory-related reporting and training
  • Communicate with various academic staff on laboratory matters
  • Respond to any in-class critical incidents
  • Comply with company policies and procedures, including WHS legislation requirements
  • Ensure as far as is practicable that the workplace, under your control, is safe and without risks to health

Requirements

  • A Science degree in a field relevant to Biology and/or Chemistry (essential)
  • Experience in using chemicals and equipment (essential)
  • Experience in a secondary or tertiary laboratory context (essential)
  • Excellent attention to detail skills
  • Honours or postgraduate qualifications are an advantage. Vocational laboratory qualifications (desirable)
  • Ability to develop good relationships with students, academic staff and administrative staff
  • Able to work above set fraction at peak periods
  • Excellent verbal, written and organisational skills
  • Ability to resolve spontaneous issues and respond appropriately to each circumstance
  • Ability to plan, control, coordinate and manage activities autonomously
  • Excellent organisation, planning and interpersonal skills
