About the Role

The Student Counsellor has the core responsibility of ensuring the overall welfare of students by providing a range of counselling and support services to individual students.  We are seeking a student centric and compassionate person to provide end to end counselling services to individual students.

This is a part-time role of 6 hours per week.

  • Counsel students on demand about personal and welfare matters, identifying issues affecting students and develop responses to those issues
  • Provide basic welfare counselling as appropriate for primary welfare issues (e.g. homesickness, low grades, stress etc.) to individuals or groups
  • Raise awareness among school staff of issues facing the student populations
  • Maintain records in Edupoint/SMS accurate and timely student case notes in Student Management System (Edupoint/SMS)
  • Identify trends in issues facing students and report to Services teams to inform student support practices at the schools

This role will work across the International Education component of Kaplan Australia, including Kaplan Business School, The University of Adelaide College and Murdoch Institute of Technology.

About You

To succeed in this role you'll be empathetic, considerate and sensitive to various cultures; commitment to quality; and the ability to work independently and take initiative, but also be an enthusiastic team player.

In addition the successful candidate will have:

Essential

  • Tertiary qualification in Psychology, Social Work, Counselling, or equivalent; combined with relevant work experience and a demonstrated commitment to the safety and wellbeing of students.
  • Working with Children Check
  • Awareness of and experience with cultural issues facing international students, and an ability to communicate effectively and sensitively regarding these issues
  • Possession of appropriate interpersonal skills and an ability to apply interpersonal skills in a cross-cultural context
  • Positive and supportive communication style with experience across a variety of key stakeholders
  • Ability to plan, control, coordinate and manage activities with minimal supervision
  • Excellent verbal and written communication
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products and the ability to quickly learn new systems
  • Being available outside standard business hours in exceptional circumstances such as critical incidents involving students

 Desirable

  • Previous experience of volume caseloads within an educational capacity

It is a requirement of all Kaplan employees to complete a National Police Check and hold a valid Working with Children Check in your relevant state. All costs will be covered by the employer.
